I Thought I Had to Know Everything Before Starting My Side Hustle (But I Was Learning the Wrong Things First)

When I first became interested in building an online side hustle, I thought the smartest thing I could do was learn everything before I started.

It seemed logical. If I understood the entire process first, it would help me decide if I even wanted to pursue it in the first place.

It would also help me avoid making mistakes and wasting time and money.

And I’d have a much better chance of succeeding.

Looking back now, I realize that this thinking was incomplete. I’ll explain.

Why I Wanted to Know Everything

Whenever we start something new, whether a business, a new career, or even a major project, most of us naturally want to understand the whole picture.

What does success actually require?

What tools do I need?

How much work is involved?

What are the chances this will actually work?

Building an online side hustle was no different for me.

I wanted to understand everything.

How do you get traffic?

How do you build an email list?

How do affiliate marketers sell digital products?

How do you write emails?

How do landing pages work?

How do people actually make money online?

I wanted answers before I committed.

Learning Was Exciting

The funny thing is…

Learning was the fun part.

I read books.

I took online advertising courses.

I learned about Facebook ads.

Landing pages.

Email marketing.

Sales videos.

Funnels.

Affiliate marketing.

Every new topic felt exciting because it helped me understand another piece of the puzzle.

I felt productive.

I felt like I was making progress.

Until I tried putting it all together.

Then Reality Hit

Nothing happened.

Very little traffic.

Very few people joining my email list.

Very few product sales.

Hours of work…

with almost nothing to show for it.

That was frustrating.

I started wondering if I was doing something wrong.

I questioned whether I’d ever figure it out.

I even felt embarrassed talking about my side hustle because I knew the first question people would ask:

“So… how’s it going?”

The truth was…

I wasn’t getting the results I expected.

What I Finally Realized

Looking back, I don’t think I was learning the wrong things.

I was learning them in the wrong order.

That was the breakthrough. I had to stop trying to do everything, and instead focus on the first step in the process that needed to be mastered.

The tricky part is that everything seems important at first.

I didn’t know how to figure out what the first step was and have confidence that I wouldn’t end up wasting more time and making mistakes.

Eventually, I joined a coaching and mentorship program that introduced me to a framework called the Four Core Areas of Making Money.

It wasn’t just another strategy.

It completely changed how I looked at building an online business.

The framework showed me that every stage depends on the stage before it.

You can’t build an email list without traffic.

You can’t follow up with people who never joined your email list.

You can’t consistently sell products if nobody is seeing your content in the first place.

Suddenly everything made sense.

I had been trying to understand every part of the business…

when what I really needed was to focus on mastering the very first step.

The Confidence I Was Looking For

One of the biggest surprises was where confidence actually came from.

I thought confidence would come from knowing everything.

Instead…

Confidence came from making progress on the first thing that mattered.

For me, that became traffic generation.

I chose one platform, TikTok, and decided to stop worrying about everything else for a while.

Instead of trying to master every part of the business, I focused on improving one thing:

Creating better content.

Testing different video scripts.

Learning what my audience responded to.

Watching the data.

Making adjustments.

Little by little, I started seeing progress.

More views.

More engagement.

More profile visits.

More people finding my blog.

More people joining my email list.

The business hadn’t suddenly become easy.

But I was finally moving forward.

And that progress created something I had been trying to get through learning alone.

Confidence.

The Lesson I’ll Never Forget

If I could go back and give myself one piece of advice, it would be this:

Don’t confuse understanding the entire business with knowing what deserves your attention today.

Those are two very different things.

Understanding the whole process is valuable.

But mastering the first step is what creates momentum.

Once that first step becomes stronger, the next step has something to build on.

And then the next.

That’s true whether you’re building an online side hustle or almost anything else worth pursuing.

Where I Would Start Today

One of the resources that first introduced me to this way of thinking was a free training created by my mentor, Dean Holland.

It’s a short, beginner-friendly video that explains the Four Core Areas of Making Money and the sequence that helped me stop trying to master everything at once.

If you’re just getting started, or you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by trying to learn every aspect of building an online business, I think it’s an excellent place to begin.
