Escaping the 9-to-5: The Journey to Building Freedom Through Business
Every day on TikTok, I see people venting their frustration about the grind: working meaningless 9-to-5 jobs, not feeling fulfilled with their career, and living for the weekend. You can hear the pain and exhaustion in their voices. They talk about wanting more time for family, friends, and passion projects, but often feel stuck in a routine that drains their energy and creativity.
If you’ve ever felt that way, trust me, I’ve been there too.
My first job out of college was in sales. I had to be at the office at a specific time. The higher-ups determined sales quotas. Managers were asking me what I was doing every day to make progress, sales, and money. There was pressure to please them. While I worked with some great people, it was still just a job with predetermined expectations.
Sound familiar?
If so, keep reading because I’m going to share what I’ve learned about creating The Ultimate Prize: true freedom of time and money by breaking it down into four levels, and The Ultimate Tool that best helped me close the most significant gap I experienced in my entrepreneurial journey (that you might be struggling with, too).
Level 1: Freedom to Work When You Want
After working for the sales organization I mentioned for five or six years, I built a decent “book of business” or a group of clients. While the products that clients purchased were “owned” by the company I worked for, I realized that I owned the relationships and could go out on my own doing the same thing, but as a true entrepreneur with my own business.
Initially, I had no idea how many twists and turns it would take.
After a few years of being out on my own, I wasn’t doing as well as I hoped and had pretty much given up on my business and entrepreneurial pursuits. The struggles overcame me.
Time to go back to working for someone else.
So, I created a resume and sent it to many companies. I then went on three interviews.
After the third one, however, something didn’t sit right with me.
The thought of having another person decide when I work, how much I make, when I can take time off, and for how long was devastating. This is when I realized that I would lose the time freedom that I had gained from being my own boss.
Once you get a taste of freedom, even a small one, it’s hard to go back. Despite my lack of business success during that time, I had gained the freedom of time. I created my own schedule. I didn’t have to tell my boss if I took a day off.
I didn’t fully realize this until I went on those interviews.
This is what I discovered: “level 1” of The Ultimate Prize spectrum is the freedom of time, particularly creating your own schedule and working when you want. Being your own boss gives you this. At this first level, you may not be able to take a month off or work only 4 hours a week (as Tim Ferriss advertises in his famous book “The 4-Hour Workweek”), and you may not yet be financially free.
But at least you have achieved a minimum standard of time freedom that many people crave and desire. There is still a ton of work to do, but at least you can do it on your own terms.
I decided to continue my quest for entrepreneurship and face the challenges in order to keep my freedom of time! Why? Because freedom of time was that valuable to me. The pain of losing my freedom of time was worse than the pain of growing a business.
Level 2: Freedom to Choose What Tasks to Do
While level 1’s freedom of time is incredible, it’s far from ideal to achieving The Ultimate Prize. Let’s delve deeper and explore more key insights to get us closer to this ultimate prize.
One key advantage of building a business is the ability to manage tasks. You’re in control. Is there a task you don’t want to do? There’s probably a service available to do it for you. The key is that entrepreneurship allows you to make decisions about HOW and WHAT you spend your time on.
Here are two specific tools available to help you complete necessary tasks efficiently, allowing you to focus on the most essential money-making tasks, which should be your priority.
1. Delegate to Elevate
This was a tough one for me.
When you start your own business, you wear every hat. You’re the CEO, marketer, customer-service rep, accountant, and sometimes even janitor.
But if you want your business to grow, you have to let go.
Delegation isn’t just about hiring people to do things you don’t like doing; it’s about freeing yourself to focus on what truly drives growth.
When I finally started hiring help for repetitive tasks in my main business (doing admin work and answering customer questions), I instantly had more time to focus on strategy and business development.
When you have other people helping you with day-to-day tasks, it will help free up more of your time to do what you want; whether that’s working on your business (instead of in it), working less each week, or taking extended time off.
2. Use Automation and AI Tools
We live in one of the most exciting times in history for entrepreneurs.
Technology has leveled the playing field.
There are now countless tools that can automate or streamline tasks that used to take hours, from automated email sequences and social media scheduling to AI-powered customer service and analytics dashboards.
I’ve personally used automation to save hundreds of hours each year. They can help you set up a task once and then automate its management, allowing you to stay organized and complete tasks much faster. This leaves you to focus on creativity, growth, and building relationships.
Remember: automation doesn’t replace the human touch. It amplifies it.
Level 3: Building Financial Freedom with Unlimited Income Potential
One of the greatest rewards of owning a business is that your income potential is virtually unlimited. No boss is setting your salary, no HR department capping your raise, and no “yearly review” deciding your worth.
You decide how much you earn by how much value you create, how well you serve your customers, and how effectively you scale your systems.
That’s the beauty of business ownership. Your effort compounds. Your ideas compound. And eventually, your income compounds.
But here’s the catch that I’ve personally experienced: your business must become profitably sustainable.
That means generating more than enough to cover expenses and personal needs so you can create a buffer, a cushion of health for both your business and your life. Think of profit like oxygen: your business can survive without it for a moment, but not for long.
And here’s something that took me years to learn:
It’s not greedy to make a lot of money. It’s responsible. This may sound strange at first, and, of course, you never want to be greedy and do something unethically, so let me explain this concept a little more.
When your business earns abundantly, you gain the ability to reinvest, weather downturns, help more customers, and create stability for everyone who depends on you.
Making “more than enough” isn’t selfish. It’s the foundation for financial freedom.
This requires a mind shift because most of us are used to earning a specific dollar amount every hour, every pay period, and every year. We’re accustomed to living in a world where earnings are predetermined. When you start to make way more money than you did before, it might feel like you don’t deserve it. Interestingly, this is normal in the business world and is precisely what creates financial freedom.
Building a Business With Real Value (So You Can Sell It Someday)
Here’s a truth that hit me like a ton of bricks one day:
If your business completely falls apart when you take a vacation, it’s not a business- it’s a job that you happen to own.
That was a wake-up call.
I once spoke with a business consultant who specialized in helping entrepreneurs sell their companies. He told me something I’ll never forget:
“The most valuable business is one where the owner can walk away, and it keeps running smoothly.”
Think about that.
That means your systems, people, and processes should eventually run the show, not you. When that happens, not only do you gain freedom of time and an unlimited income potential, but you also build a valuable asset that can be sold for a profit someday.
How great is this?!?
Level 4: Achieving The Ultimate Prize: Freedom of Time and Money
As we are now aware, the ultimate prize is having total freedom of time and money.
Imagine not HAVING to work at all and having all of your living expenses paid for. How would that feel? What would you do if every day were Saturday?
Here’s the real beauty of building a business the right way:
You gain options.
You can take a week off, and your business will continue to run smoothly. You can spend more time with your kids, go on a trip, or start another passion project and still generate income.
That’s what I call freedom.
And it’s what most people working a traditional job crave.
Because at the end of the day, life is short. Nobody wants to look back and realize they spent most of their life building someone else’s dream instead of their own.
How do you achieve this? Here’s one main way.
Create Passive (or Semi-Passive) Income Streams
This is my greatest dream: earning money even when I’m not actively working by maximizing passive income strategies.
Now, let’s be real. True “set it and forget it” passive income doesn’t exist for most people. Everything requires effort upfront. But you can build systems that eventually run with minimal involvement.
Affiliate marketing, for example, is one of my favorite models. Once your traffic systems, email list, and follow-up sequences are in place, they can generate commissions while you sleep.
The same goes for digital products, memberships, or even online courses. Once built, they can keep generating sales on autopilot.
When I started meeting business owners who worked part-time but earned full-time incomes because they had systems and people running their operations, that was the “aha” moment for me.
That’s the ultimate goal: to create something that runs with or without you..
Why Most People Stay Stuck
Let’s be honest. Breaking out of the 9-to-5 grind isn’t easy.
Most people want to, but fear holds them back. Fear of failure. Fear of the unknown. Fear of judgment.
They tell themselves things like:
-
“I don’t know where to start.”
-
“I don’t have time.”
-
“I’m not good at sales.”
-
“What if I fail?”
You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just need to start.
Every successful entrepreneur you see online started as a beginner, too. They made mistakes, learned lessons, and kept moving forward.
If you’re reading this, you already have something many people don’t- awareness. You recognize there’s more out there than the 9-to-5 grind. That’s the first step.
The Ultimate Tool: Finding the Right Mentorship
I’ll share a secret: my biggest breakthroughs didn’t come from working harder. They came from working alongside people smarter than me.
For years, I tried to be a “lone wolf” entrepreneur. I’d buy courses, watch YouTube videos, and purchase some mini-courses, but I never had real mentorship. I could save money by doing it all myself.
Big mistake.
Once I finally accepted that I needed coaching and guidance, things began to change rapidly. I invested in programs that provided structure, accountability, and direct feedback from people who had already built successful businesses. Yes, the better programs cost thousands of dollars, but the level of change is profound.
The program I’m currently in, which I highly recommend to anyone else, is called the Accelerator Program from a company called Internet Profits. The mentorship, the step-by-step systems, and the community- they all helped me grow faster and with much more clarity. If you’re serious about growing an online business and want to learn more, feel free to reach out to me. I’m always happy to share my experience or answer questions about it. Or, click here to check it out yourself.
But let’s get back to what kept me going when things got tough.
My Advice for Anyone Starting Their Journey
If you’re at the beginning of your journey or thinking about starting one, here’s what I’d tell you:
-
Find mentorship. Don’t go it alone. Learn from people who’ve already done what you want to do.
-
Build systems early. Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed to automate or delegate.
-
Think long-term. Focus on building something that could run without you someday.
-
Be patient. Freedom doesn’t happen overnight. It is the reward for consistency.
-
Never stop learning. The online world changes fast, and the learners always win.
Final Thoughts: The Freedom Is Worth the Fight
If you’re feeling stuck in a job that drains you, I get it.
But please know that it is possible to create a life where you have control over your time, income, and future.
It’s not easy, and it doesn’t happen overnight. But it’s worth it.
Every late night, every setback, every moment of doubt all add up to something greater.
And one day, you’ll look back and realize that the struggle was part of the story that made you who you are.
So keep going. Keep learning. Keep building.
